Tracking the behavior of biodegradable polymers inside the body is a major challenge in medical research and implant technology. Traditional imaging methods often struggle to provide consistent and reliable data due to changes in tissue properties and environmental factors. The Fixler Lab recently presented new findings on fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) applied to indocyanine green (ICG)-labeled biodegradable copolymers. This approach offers a promising way t

Extracting optical properties from turbid media has long challenged researchers due to the complex ways light scatters and absorbs in such materials. A new study from Fixler Lab, recently published in Optics Express, introduces an integrated framework called DRS–IMOPE that promises to improve the accuracy and range of optical-property extraction. By combining camera-based diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) with multi-plane phase retrieval (IMOPE), this approach enhances c

Congratulations to Yuval Haibi on completing his MSc degree with a final grade of 95. Yuval’s research contributed to the development of integrated DRS and IMOPE methods for quantitative optical-property extraction in scattering media.

Fixler Lab was awarded a new Israel Science Foundation research grant. The project will develop optical methods for characterizing heterogeneous multilayer scattering media using indirect phase-related metrics extracted from diffusely reflected light.

Fixler Lab was awarded a new collaborative project with Prof. Zhongping Chen at the University of California, Irvine. The project, “Quantitative Decoupling of Absorption and Scattering via IPL-OCT Integration,” will explore integration of IPL-based optical decoupling with OCT-based imaging and sensing approaches. Fixler Lab published new work in the Journal of Biomedical Optics on endoscopic iso-pathlength self-calibration. The study extends the IPL concept to hollow cylindrical structures relevant to endoscopic geometries, supporting future direction-resolved retrieval of tissue optical properties. Link

Prof. Dror Fixler was appointed Track Chair for the Nano/Biophotonics track at SPIE BiOS, part of SPIE Photonics West. This appointment reflects the lab’s ongoing contribution to nanophotonics, biophotonics, biomedical optics, and optical sensing. Link

Prof. Dror Fixler was officially appointed by the Standards Institution of Israel (SII) to serve as Israel’s representative to ISO/TC 121/SC 3/JWG 10 and IEC/TC 62/SC 62D/JWG 5, the joint international working groups focused on pulse oximetry standards. This activity connects the lab’s research in pulse oximetry, skin-tone-related optical bias, and self-calibrated optical sensing with international medical-device standardization.

Fixler Lab congratulates Ariel Ashkenazi and Bat-Sheva Wagon-Galmidi on receiving their PhD degrees. We are proud of their achievements and wish them continued success in their scientific and professional careers.

Fixler Lab published a new paper in Optics Letters on reducing hypoxemia overestimation in pulse oximetry using the iso-pathlength point. The study investigates wavelength-dependent photon pathlength differences and proposes IPL-based measurement as a physics-informed approach for improving pulse-oximetry robustness. Link

Prof. Dror Fixler delivered a Light–Matter Interaction seminar at Tel Aviv University. The talk focused on how internal structure in opaque multilayer media is encoded in externally measured optical signals, and how inverse modeling can translate diffuse optical responses into quantitative information.
